Gawad Kalinga Harvest 2007"GK" is an abbreviation for "Gawad Kalinga," a Tagalog phrase meaning "to give care". GK is a Philippine-based anti-poverty movement launched in 2001 by Couples for Christ, to care for worse-off Filipinos and survivors of natural disasters. GK is now a growing multi-sectoral partnership with the motto "NO MORE SLUMS". Together with its partners, Gawad Kalinga actively works in poverty-stricken areas to improve their quality of life. All of the buildings in a GK Village are painted colorfully, and are aptly named "colors of hope". Although Gawad Kalinga was started by a Christian family ministry, the GK communities are also open to Filipino Muslims and other denominations, which is evident at the GK villages in Mindanao, and also the International Villages in other countries. Gawad Kalinga is ultimately driven by the mantra, "Less for self, more for others, enough for all." Gawad Kalinga in Australia have run a program called "GKYGAT" where youths travel to a GK village to witness the Gawad Kalinga program. This photo was taken on 24/03/2007. |
